Classical Conversations cycle 2 – Living Books

I want to share some of these amazing books because they are so good they delight my heart. Most are picture books because my 4 year old doesn’t take a nap anymore, so he is involved with our activities and instead of fighting him to try to sit still and be quiet (after hours of that in the morning) I decided to use wonderful picture books that will hold his interest. The 9 and 7 year old are engaged by them as well. Win-win.

This is just what we did. Notice, it’s not a lot, but it is good stuff.

Disclaimer: We are in a Classical Conversations community this year (2013-2014) and I love it. I love the structure of the program, since we are quite unstructured the rest of the time.

The thing is, we don’t do the program the typical way. The idea is to have your kids memorize facts during the early years to build on later, not worrying if they understand. I can’t do that. I want to dive into the time periods, learn the stories, explore the richness of the content through wonderful books and art. So we do.

We don’t work on memory work at all during the week. We listen to the CDs on the way to the YMCA and whatever they pick up, they pick up. I’m good with that. We might practice some of the math in the car if they want to review. I try to point out the geography on our maps in the schoolroom, but that’s it. Mostly we just read on one or two topics that sounded interesting to me. It’s lovely.
